Hyundai ix20 hand brake

Bought a used car as above recently with 12 months MOT. I can see from the paperwork that it at first failed at the dealership for offside handbrake inoperative they then repaired and it passed. Didn't think too much about it but after three months the handbrake performance is weak.
Looking at the mot history it has failed for the same side handbrake several times before it's retested and passing, including just months before the previous owner sold it, ie had 9 months MOT already when it went for sale.
Obviously something more fundamental than whatever the dealership and previous garages did to fix it (dont have details) but have you heard of something similar and how much it might cost?

Rear disc or drum braking? I have a 2018 iX20 with auto box, so rear disc brakes and uprated engine. No problems at all after over a year.I think this job really needs
a much bigger hammer.

It's clearly at least 5-6yo to have had several tests.
Could just need a handbrake cable, maybe a caliper at the outside. Is the handbrake on the disc itself on these, or is it a drum inside the bell of the disc?0
