Apprenticeships, Child benefit and child tax credit

I've tried to search information on weather I would loose my claim for Child Benefit and Child Tax Credit if my 18 takes up an offer of an apprenticeship which the college has found

The fact that he's only been at this college since September this year it was a bit of a shock but it seems he's the only one who got offer it.

I know I should be pleased but I have to think of the long term effects on my household.

I have asked him did he ask any of the questions like how many hours and would he still be able to attend college but he thinks yes but not sure how many days.

He just see the money he might get paid.

Any advice would be great.
I plan to call the benefit office and I've left a message for his teacher but so far they have not responded.

Thanks in advance.

Wow - whereas you can only see the money that you are being paid? He is 18 and not a "child", but you would prefer to see him turn down an opportunity for a future if it meant that you don't keep getting money that you think is yours? Any child benefit or tax credit you get is to support him, and not to support you. If he earns money then he needs to start paying his way in the household. But to consider holding him back because of your own selfish interests is despicable.

Apprenticeships should be 20% off the job training be this at college or whatever, so that's effectively one full day of a five day working week and so answers that question.

Anyway a quick Google takes you here:
    https://www.gov.uk/child-benefit

which says on the first page:
"You get Child Benefit if you’re responsible for bringing up a child who is under 20 if they stay in approved education or training - of which a "traditional apprenticeship" paid at the apprenticeship rates (or any rates really) doesn't qualify, however I get the impression from these pages they only apply if they go straight into it at 16 which may not be the case here.

as for Child Tax Credit, again a quick Google takes you here:
    https://www.gov.uk/child-tax-credit

Which says on the first page:
If they [your child] are in approved education or training, you can claim [Chilid Tax Credit] until their 20th birthday but this takes you back to the same page as per the Child Benefit.

I would seriously suggest that your household situation is going to be that stretched by the losing of these benefits perhaps you could consider improving your situation like your son is. Are you working at the moment? If not, now would probably be a good time.

If your son is 18 then your eligibility for child benefit would normally have stopped soon in any case.
But a banker, engaged at enormous expense,
Had the whole of their cash in his care.

No, it continues to 20 if in approved education.

It does, but it is most common to end 'approved education' the year you turn 18, though some people continue longer. University does not count, for instance. Anyone with a child this age should be planning for the end of child benefit - even 20 isn't that far away for planning!
