Tesco's remove plastic food bags

I'm old enough to remember the days before plastic bags for fruit and veg, or (and my main bugbear) plastic trays.
My Mum had a couple of string bags which took all the veg (at the bottom) and fruit at the top. Potatoes were mostly covered in dirt, Jersey's had loose pieces of skin hanging off and fruit was mult-shaped.0 -

Ride hard or stay home :iloveyou:0 -
When I was a lass ( many moons ago) I used to be sent down to the fruit and veg market with the shopper on wheels to get the veg
Straight in, no bags, 10lb of spuds, mud an all
Then on top of those, the carrots, the sprouts, the cabbage, the onions, whatever. Nothing in bags, just all tipped in
Then when I got home with it I had to sort it all out
I hated the winter, picking the loose spouts out of the muddy spuds
I don't use the plastic bags in supermarkets and I won't be buying any special nets. I put my fruit and veg loose in my trolly and it goes loose in my bags0 -
Shame that Tesco haven't communicated this new policy to the staff who pick the home delivery orders.
The only loose fruit I purchased was bananas.
They sent them in a thin plastic bag.
Totally unnecessary.0 -
Our Tesco still has plenty of free plastic bags by the fruit and veg.
So is it just Tescos in "affluent" areas which have stopped using them?0 -
I just came back from my local Tesco Extra. Plenty of the thin plastic bags.
If it wasn't for those bags, I would have to buy my sandwich bags. At least with the fruit & veg bags, they get used 3 times - once to buy the fruit & veg, once for sandwiches, and a last time for putting rubbish in. If I bought sandwich bags, they would only get used twice. If it sticks, force it.
If it breaks, well it wasn't working right anyway.0 -
and charge 30p for them. What is wrong with paper bags?
You have to chop down trees to make them. You then have to process the trees into wood pulp to make the bags. Then you use them once, because they are too flimsy.
They may be biodegradable, but in other respects, they are not that eco-friendly.If it sticks, force it.

Sainsbury's bakery has handy paper bags now, perfect for loose fruit/veg. I used them when they took the bags away without notice. With sufficient notice, I would have brought my own suitable carrier.0
