Hello didnotbat and welcome to the Forums.

Have you tried pressing any buttons on the meter to re-activate the display? Some smart meters have displays that go into a standby mode after a time.

If you've tried this and the display is still blank, please contact our smart meter teams (contact details are on our website). They'll go through the situation with you and, if needed, arrange for a technician to check your meter.

    Thanks didnotbat.

How do you justify that? My aged parents have been on Economy 10 since the year dot with Eastern Electricity (taken over by e.on years ago).

Recently they were given an ultimatum by e.on. Get a smart meter and choose a new Economy 10 tariff or an Economy 7 tariff or an "unrestricted" tariff and get shafted, or agree nothing but get shafted harder.

By e.on's own projections, the increased annual cost respectively in each case based on a £100pm existing average bill for a simple two up two down with no other energy source was:

    +32%
    +23%
    +50%
+72% (refuse the meter and be forced onto e.on's standard one price all units tariff)

The majority of their bill is for heating. How is that complex to provide electricity to pass through a resistance to create heat? It doesn't matter what voltage they supply or whether they maintain 50 Hz, the heaters will still heat up.

Energy companies are shysters especially e.on in my book, but seemingly not in yours?

This mirrors my vulnerable sister's experience. But she received the letter in 2017 and as she did not understand it (she has dementia) did not respond. As a result EON as stated put her on a punitive standard tariff. This has resulted in her running up an outstanding balance of £2000 as no meter readings have been taken. I try to help her with her finances but as her monthly payments were reasonable I did not investigate meter, tariff or usage. However it now appears from the above post as if people have still been on Economy 10 tariffs until 2019 so why did EON force my sister off it in 2017?

Talk to E.On about your sister's situation - if you haven't already you will need to get yourself listed as someone with permission to look after her account. Believe it or not, E.On are a supplier with well above average customer service. They might be able to come to some arrangement to reduce the debit balance and make a reasonable deal going forward. If not, you'll have to find some way to clear the balance and switch away.

Hello PMSG and I've just replied to the separate thread you started about your sister's Economy 10 meter at the link below. Hope it's of interest.

We'll be happy to look at setting up a payment arrangement to spread the balance over a more manageable period. As you mention in the other thread about the account being set up for you to manage, you'll be able to do this on your sister's behalf.

As in the above link, please talk to our Simpler Metering team about the options now we're no longer able to support her older three-rate Economy 10 meter.

    Thanks PMSG.
