I take it banks never make mistakes then, I can assure you that my dad never had anything from the the Halifax asking him if the account was still required and in answer to another response on here they have lived in the same house for over 50 years.
Of course banks make mistakes, so when they have done and this can clearly be demonstrated then they'll typically offer apologies and compensation, if the scale of the mistake warrants it.

Failing to notify an account-holder that his account is becoming dormant would clearly be a mistake, so it makes sense that they'd be prepared to offer something for that, together with seemingly not advising him that they'd take care of retrieving the money from RFL, as per their stated policy quoted above.

However, allowing someone to open a bog standard account that pays little or no interest isn't in itself a mistake as such unless there's more to it than that. There are some more regulated activities that require banks to conduct proper fact-finding exercises and accept responsibility for advice given, but opening a standard account isn't one of them, so they have no obligation to steer customers towards the most rewarding accounts....

How can you assure anyone that your dad did not receive any letters? Unless you have been checking every letter he received over the last few years you can't.

Re interest, believe it or not there are many bank accounts that don't pay any. Did he not notice from the statements that no interest was being paid......or did he not receive these either.
