Flight points to get to Oz

Have a Tesco card at the moment and probably spend £20k pa. Want to fly to Oz (Adelaide) in 3/4 years with wife and in something above economy class.
Any thoughts on which card is best. Obvs BA and Virgin not sure which is better or if there are any other schemes/cards I could be looking at?

    To be honest, neither.

    If you're flying economy, the taxes and fees (which you still have to pay on an 'airmiles' flight) are so high you might as well just get a decent sale fare.

    If you want to fly business then I think you'll need something like 200,000 avios (for BA) which even with a sign up bonus is going to take 6 years to earn.

    Agreed. You would be better off saving up for the flights thereby giving yourself a free choice of airline and, as you will not be travelling for 3 years if you are not too fussy about the exact date will have pleanty of time to look around for the best fare and dates.

    Presunably you are getting clubcard points on your card. Use these to save on your Tesco shopping or, if you don't shop at Tesco, look around for a reward scheme or a cashback card more suited to your annual spend level.

    I'd say if you want a 'decent' seat, the likely best value plan (assuming nothing changes...) is
    * Buy economy/premium economy
    * Upgrade with points
    *(accept that means paying some more taxes etc)

    In that case, I'd look at BA. Peak PE to business is 50k avios per pasenger each way at peak, and about +£230 in taxes for the return each. (so, still 200k avios + ~£465 on top of PE cost - but more achievable than 600k Avios + £1400 in tax,,,,). I don't know what flying you'll be doing, but that's probably a high target for most with pure CC spending.

    Also, they only fly to Sydney AFAIK so you'd need to find an internal flight for the last hop.

    Qatar London to Adelaide is about £2.5k each way cash fare by the looks (in business), maybe save up and look for a sale fare from them is an alternative? Other than flying I don't think there's a good way to earn their miles in the UK.

    Used to use the Tesco points for days out for the kids. Not to many other options and just thought this might be a goer.
