Does RM include tracking with letters?

Hi all,

I've got a small low-ish value item that will be able to be sent as a large letter (value less than £20). I know that when sending parcels by Royal Mail they now include a reference number on the receipt to check it's status and it's suffice for Ebay. Or it was the last time I sent anything which was a little while ago.

But is it the same for letters? Just don't want to get caught out by sending something as a letter to help keep postage rates down but then lose out in the long run if it gets lost in post for the sake of a pound or two if a) there is no tracking and/or b) if large letters don't include the usual up to £20 protection.

I've had a look on the RM website but when I search it only comes up with articles relating to business post which I'm not.

Any advice appreciated.

For day to day posting only parcels have delivery confirmation included - it's not tracking, but assuming it shows as delivered it is suitable for PayPal.

Currently large letters and letters do not have delivery confirmation.however, the standard £20 insured value does still apply for large letters

  • No online delivery confirmation, I tried it myself out of curiosity a couple of times.

They do provide cover up to £20. Signed For is more expensive but still cheaper than a parcel, if you're wanting a middle ground with delivery confirmation.

If you go to the PO you can get a free certificate of posting for large letters. It doesn't provide tracking or proof of delivery but it does allow you to claim from RM up to £20.
  • On the face of it Royal Mail treat them all the same but with Large Letters (not purchased on a business account) they won't share the information with you.

Would be interesting to know what happens when a buyer claims INR, you in turn claim from Royal Mail and they have a delivery scan on their internal system.

  • Thanks again all. I agree with the question you are asking 'lunatic in my head' and wonder the same thing.
