Hello All, could someone tell me what my options are please.

Moved into a property on 13th September
The same day the energy supplier was changed from E On to Octopus
E on, 4 weeks later have sent us a final Estimated Bill

The meters we have are Smart Meters
Asked Eon how on earth have they "estimated" the bill, isn't that the whole point of smart meters??
They said those are the readings Octopus provided, I said why couldn't you just pick up the final readings from the meter, you know with it being smart and all......? Um... we don't know.

So basically they are insiting i pay their estimated final bill.

I don't know what the move in readings were so....?

  • Every time I ve switched the gaining supplier, Octopus in your case , deal with obtaining a start reading for them which is also an end reading for Eon. Octopus would not be able to access the smart meter
The smart meter would have been switched to dumb because at the moment smart switching is nt up and running.
If you do not know the move in readings they will use an estimated reading used for both Octopus start and Eons end reading.
I know it sounds bonkers but an estimated final bill has been around for years

What you don't pay for with one supplier, you will have to pay for with the other.

Unless the reading used is way out, the supplier is not even going to entertain a complaint.

Just ensure the startr reading used by the new supplier matches the final meter redaing used by the old supplier.

    Good morning cooltt,

    What's been said is correct.

When customers change suppliers it the new supplier that drives the switch.

The customer would give the meter reads to the new supplier, these are then sent to the losing supplier via a number of third parties to verify.

The final bill is then based on these readings, this is an industry wide process.

I would advise you to ensure that the reads on the final bill match to the reads that your new supplier has started your account from.

If the reads don't match or they are way off what you gave to your new supplier, you can ask for an ARD (agreed reads dispute) to be raised. This is where both suppliers will re-agree meter readings to open and close the account to. This process can take a bit of time.

I'm sorry that you weren't given the correct process over the phone though, our advisors should certainly know how this works.

    Thank you

You have fallen foul of a totally stupid situation where as soon as you start a switch the losing supplier loses contact with the snart meter (so can't access a reading) & only the new supplier can access it (if they actually can which is debatable). Incredible but true. Comes under the heading of couldn't organise a booze up in a brewery, which seems to summarise the whole smart meter debacle.
