tenancy renewal

Could someone clarify tenancy fees please. I thought they were banned recently....
Anyway, in Jan 2019 I signed a new tenancy agreement for 12 months, and have just heard from the letting agents that they want to hear back in terms of if I want to sign a new agreement or not next year, along with a £114 invoice if I do.
Can they do that if it is banned?
or can they because my current tenancy mentioned fees and i signed it before the ban came into place?

if your current tenancy agreement mentions renewal fees these can be charged for the coming year....but not beyond that.
Talk to your agent about a rolling contract going forward, you really don't need to feel pressurised into another set term contract unless that's what you specifically want.
At present once your current contract ends you will automatically go onto a rolling contractin S 38 T 2 F 50

But if current agreement includes a fee, then it can be charged till July 2020.
Or go periodic - no fee. See
