Apple Refund When Bought Online

I was wondering If I could get an opinion on my problem...

I bought some Apple Airpods from their online store in March. Airpods came with 1 year warranty.

After 2 months, one of the airpods was lower in volume so they exchanged for a new one - all done over the phone and by post. A further 2 months down the line the other ear failed, and again they replaced it. Now after 6 months, one of the replacement airpods has failed.

I have told Apple the product is not fit for purpose and I want a full refund ( I know the 2 airpods are not the original items, and the only original item is the charging case). They have agreed on a refund but first I must take it to an authorised Apple dealer for a diagnostics check. My problem is that I live 50 miles from the closest store. I have asked for fuel money, but they have refused.

Is it fair/right that even though I bought an item online, to get a refund I need to physically take get it to an Apple store? They said I didn't need to return it to a store last time as I was asking for a replacement, but this time they say I must go to a store as I want a refund.

Any thoughts?

They could insist that you get an independant report to prove the item is inherently faulty as you have owned it for over 6 months. They could also deduct a percentage of the refund to take into account the 7 months of the item.

Have you asked whether you could send the item special delivery to the nearest store? What about phoning the store direct and asking them?
  • Thanks powerful_Rogue for your answer.

I will ask about sending by special delivery.

I understand the refunded amount can be reduced due to it's age, but as most of the components have been replaced, it seems odd they can offer a low amount. Maybe I should take the offer of a replacement earpiece and charging unit and sell on, if there's a chance I won't receive a full refund.

50 miles and you will get the exact details of the fault .
Or you pay for an independant report.
