Stuck in dispute between 2 tradesman

I needed some work done in my flat. This involved 2 separate tradesmen - I hired them they didn't know each other.

Tradesman 1 did his part, then tradesman 2 came in to do his part. T2 says that T1s work is substandard and he cannot do his job. T1 comes back with his boss, boss says work is fine. T2 disputes this and refuses to do his part. so now i'm stuck. I have paid T2 half and he will not give it back or do the work.

T2 keeps phoning me shouting that he's wasted time and money on this (as he did not work on the days he was scheduled) he's really stressing me out and I'm a nervous person anyway. This has been going on for so long I've taken unpaid leave and I'm no further forward.

It would really help if you specified exactly what the work is so we can help. I'm really supprised this isn't obvious.

    There isn't even a question!
  • What does the work involve? Is it something like brickwork and plastering? We need to know what the work involves before we can say anything.
What is this life if, full of care, we have no time to stand and stare

To resolve this, you need an independent expert, such as a surveyor.
No reliance should be placed on the above! Absolutely none, do you hear?

It rather comes down to whether T2 is just being awkward, or if they genuinely cannot do their job.

We have no way to know that from your description.
    If it sticks, force it.
If it breaks, well it wasn't working right anyway.
