registering a car as SORN without documents

hey guys, recently my cousin went out and bought a car for me which i won't be using for a few weeks. I don't have log book, but my cousin has registered it with me and it's being sent out to me. my question is, do i wait until i get log book to register as sorn or do i need to do it now, if so how do i do it without logbook?

thanks

Use the reference number on the new keeper slip?

No problem. You should get the V5C in short order, probably a week or two. SORN it online as soon as you do.

...or do it now with the doc ref from the green new keeper slip. If you don't have that, why not?

PS - it IS on private land, isn't it...?
  • the car is in my cousins backyard, which is gated. he says he has no documents but has sent off for the log book for me. i'm new to all of this, my cousin has drove cars for years
  • I had this problem. No valid Ref Number to SORN the new car. DVLA just said I'd have to deal with any fines as they arose! Great system. Luckily none did arise; well not so far anyway. However technically the car was in an illegal state as it was not taxed and insured and neither was it sorned but I could not do either as I had no valid documentation. Took about 5 weeks to get a new V5 during which time I guess the car was 'illegal' although there was nothing I could do about that despite phoning, emailing and raising complaints with DVLA.

So if the old V5C has gone awol, and it's been done by a V62 application for a new one, then it's going to take a lot longer. Probably closer to two months - because DVLA will write to the last known keeper to say "Are you happy with somebody taking on this car?".

He could have SORNed it at the time as applying for the log book, by sending off a V890 with the V62. It says this on the V62 he'd have sent off...

    V62 - https://www.gov.uk/government/publications/application-for-a-vehicle-registration-certificate
    V890 - https://www.gov.uk/government/publications/v890-statutory-off-road-notification-sorn

BTW, it's your legal responsibility to be doing this, if you're going to be the new keeper, not his. It's only his problem if the car was previously in his name - in which case, he'd have a V5C...
