It seems to me that the cost of specific groceries generally don't go up much, if at all, from week to week, and at the same time there are frequently good offers (BOGOF, etc) on many things I buy on a regular basis. As part of my sealed pot challenge (and I *mean* sealed - it requires a can opener to get into
) I figured it would be a good idea to see what has been saved per grocery shop (Tesco gives you a figure for this on the receipt, and while it's frequently wrong due to how they seem to figure out their promotions it does at least show the minimum saving), take that saving and stick it in a sealed pot (or transfer that into a sealed savings account, if paying by debit card).
In theory, it's money that won't be missed because unless you factored the promotion into your budget you would have spent it anyway.
Does anyone else do this, and how well is it fitting with reality?
Thanks!

just found a lottery scratchcard on my desk that must be months old that had won £4 - just took it up to the shop and it was still valid...so, straight in the pot!
Figure there must be just under £30 in there now, and I've only had it a week - wish i'd started this a long time ago instead of keeping change in my pocket that ended up in the coke machine in work!
Edit - that's not to say i was spending £30 a week on coke! But, it must have been £5, give or take, and I need it more than Mr. Cola does!Virtual sealed pot challenge #036 - 19/01/09-1/12/09 = £483.71/£750

I'll accept that challenge, and #225 sound good to me. Thanks!
Edit: forgot the aim. I'm going for £500 minimum, spread over a sealed pot (well, not sealed...there's a slot in the top) and a "sealed" bank account for quidco, moneysupermarket, etc, payments.

Here's an idea to make some money for your pots - sell sealed pots
I went into town at the weekend to get a moneybox, and to put it bluntly, good ones appear to be rarer than rocking horse crap! Sign of the times, maybe!
After trying 5 or 6 different shops, all of which either didn't sell moneyboxes or wanted more money for it than you could actually fit inside, I finally came across a small out-of-the-way shop that had two money tins, sealed and about the size of a large can of dog food (label says it will take up to £500 in £1 and £2 coins).
The downside - the one i bought it wrapped in a sleeve that markets it as for saving money towards reducing your carbon footprint (i'm actually going to use it for a mortgage overpayment).
The upside - the other design was for saving money towards a nip'n'tuck
