Travel Insurance with Nationwide

I have travel insurance courtesy of Nationwide (we pay so much into our account each month and therefore qualify).

I have two questions, the first is how long doess it usually take them to sort out a claim? I have had to cancel a holiday I had booked later this month because I am awaiting a medical procedure that I only recently discovered I needed.

The next question is if I book another holiday after I have had my procedure and am fit to travel do Nationwide still cover me? It is not a policy I have applied for/bought as I say I get it because there is a qualifying amount going through the account each month.

Even if it's a "free" policy you should be able to obtain policy information from Nationwide.

Can't comment on the claims procedure, since I have never used it myself. But if it's anything like the insurance bundled with the FlexPlus account you will need to declare the new medical condition and potentially play an add-on to keep the policy valid.

We use nationwide, they’re pretty good at paying out. I fell over in the sea when paddling in Spain 2 years ago and ruined my phone. My existing dedicated travel insurance wriggled out of paying but uk insurance, the ones behind nationwide paid up after just a phone call.

On the basis of that We took out the extension for worldwide travel and after discussion with them they charged £150 to cover pre existing conditions for me and nothing for my wife’s conditions.

Just about to renew this year
  • Nationwide travel insurance is not the fastest one. Had a claim last year. They told me to put two separate claims for delay and then re-scheduling flight. I had to wait 2 weeks before someone even checked the claims, then they asked for documents they already had. So I explained it and had to wait a week before someone checked updated info. Then they asked again for the same thing, and again I had to wait a week.

It took 5-6 weeks to get settlement, even though I provided all relevant documentation and explanation. From questions asked, I guess, that people processing travel claims don't know too much about actual travelling, flight reservation numbers, etc. Also, they tried to charge me excess which shouldn't be applied, so had to call and complain to get £50 payment.

All is done by external company.
