Hi

Have recently purchased a pack of 4 x ASDA rechargeable batteries (AA). So it's a brand new pack.

Have just tried to recharged 2 of them, for the first time, but they just DIDN'T recharge!! (Although they were left in the charger for the recommended time.) So thought I must have forgotten to set the switch on the charger to the correct setting of 'Charge' ;) - so again tried to recharge them. But yet again no joy! Ditto a 3rd attempt. :(

We know the charger itself is working as it's recently recharged lots of other rechargeable batteries. So that's not the problem.

So I tried the other 2 batteries in the 4-pack. But same problem!

Has anybody else found this issue? Is it a problem with the whole ASDA-brand of battery products, or a problem with just this one ASDA battery product (Long Life Alkaline Rechargable AA Batteries)? Or maybe we were just unlucky & got a bad batch? Weird, as I've NEVER encountered this problem with any rechargeable batteries, ever before: un-rechargeable rechargeable batteries - ROFL! :rotfl:

I think we bought them in-store. It's not the money that I'm that bothered about (wouldn't know where the receipt is anyway; not kept for such a small - & usually dependable!! - item), although it's annoyign of course. It's more the reliability: I don't want to rebuy this ASDA item - or any of their batteries - if this might happen again.

Very unfortunate re the product, as the ASDA card-pack states the batteries in the pack are supposed to be rechargeable up to 1000 times!!

I have Googled to see if anyone online has commented upon this issue on the Web, but nothing has come up.

Anybody else here at MSE had a similar problem?

Have just checked the ASDA website. Interestingly, that has no such batteries of the AA size. But they do have the same product in an AAA size (Long Life Alkaline Rechargable AAA Batteries). That item is clearly from the same range: the battery name & 'wrapping' design is identical in all ways to the item we bought, save the "AAA" vs "AA" part.

Hmmm . . . It is pretty unusual for a manufacturer/store not to produce/sell the same product in AA if they make an AAA size! So maybe this absence of the AA version on the ASDA website is proof that there is/was a problem with this particular AA battery product by ASDA, i.e. that's why it is 'no longer' on their website?!

  • Just to be clear, you bought batteries and they wont charge?

These must be what £4 or £5?

Take them back to Asda. Get your money back.

Go to Argos and buy other ones.

Are the batteries and charger compatible?

Yes. The charger charges all types of rechargeable batteries. And it's a good brand of charger: Uniross.

How have you checked that the batteries haven't charged? Voltmeter across terminals / batteries installed in an appliance that you know is working ?
  • Voltmeter across terminals
Not tech-savvy as such, so NOT the above.
batteries installed in an appliance that you know is working ?
YES, the above. Batteries are definitely NOT working.

Plus have tested on the "Test" setting on the Uniross charger we used. And have tested them in a different, pocket-sized, battery tester. Again, NO sign of any charge on these "charged" batteries, via EITHER unit!

BTW the pocket-sized, battery tester, like the Uniross battery unit, works on all OTHER batteries, so we know that is not the problem.

  • Having considered many possibles, now need to consider impossibles.

Do the batteries actually say rechargeable on them? Maybe non rechargeable were packaged in rechargeable battery packaging. ?

Is there any removable plastic seal on battery bottom, often get these on new watches where seal has to be removed before battery contact powers the watch?

Or maybe just a duff batch as you mentioned in first post
  • I think for myself, this is not techical support for batteries. TRY ME, LOVE ME. We will refund and replace if you are not 100% happy. That is what is on the back of Asda brand.

    The batteries are broke.

What bit of try me love me refund replace is hard.

    THE END

If they are Asda branded take them back for a refund. If there is a problem with an item but no one returns them they will never know.

    Try Ikea rechargables.
