    I don’t agree.

The key to buying success on ebay is:

    Bid once

    Bid your maximum

Bid late, in the dying seconds of the auction

    That works for me.

    What Avoriaz said.

So as a seller it would be best to remove these concurrent multiple bids from a sole bidder.

It's a bit of psychology that might work with some bidders, but also might encourage your seller to shill ;)

I really did try this a few years ago because as OP says the psychology of it should deter other bidders but in reality the old soaks will see right through it.

Oh 26 bids and item still only 99p...hmm could have fun here and push this guy up it should be easy to figure out his max and at least make him pay it for a bit of sport...never mind shilling it.

Av, are you me in disguise? I've been telling people that for years.

Exclamation and question marks - ONE exclamation mark or question mark is sufficient to exclaim or ask about something. More than one just makes you look/sound like a prat.
    Should OF, would OF

  • As a seller of mainly low cost items
    It works :-(
Though you are probably over doing it, one minimum bid and one proper bid a day or so later is more believable and often gets buyers my items at minimum bid price.
It looks like you've thought about it or done some research, then came back and upped your bid.

The theory depends for its success on everyone with an interest in the listing actually monitoring the listing.

Years ago, that may well have been the case. But surely, not now.

As a buyer, I decide what an item is worth to me, then leave it to a snipe engine to make a late bid. I certainly don't hang around monitoring a listing where bidding behaviour can reflect everything from newbie naivety to cynical shilling: it ain't worth my time.

As a seller, I used to see (way back when) evidence of incremental bidding by bidders trying to scare off the opposition.

I don't see much of that now, probably because it's dawned on bidders that you can't scare off the opposition if the opposition's not watching. . .
