Keep landline number

Options
Hello,

After the recent death of a family member we are trying to cut the costs of the household where they lived. The house won’t be sold however it wont be lived in for the foreseeable future at least. We wish to keep the landline number but don’t require the line rental or any of the call / broadband bundles. Is there a way we can store the landline number until we wish to use it again? After a few searches I’ve come across porting to virtual networks, how feasible is this? And are there any particular reliable porting services we should look at? Any help would be really appreciated.

I presume you want to keep the number in case anybody phones it who are not aware of the passing of the resident?

It can be done though you should check in case there are any charges for this (there probably won't be but you should check anyway) both on the outgoing provider (BT, Plusnet, TalkTalk or whoever) and the new virtual provider. Businesses tend to make use of this sort of thing, using a landline number that actually redirects to a mobile phone.

Note that if somebody does move into the house it may be classed as a new line should services be required on it.

If the house will not be lived in, what is the point in retaining the line, since there will be no one available to answer it? You could arrange for a diversion to be set up to your own number, but that means retaining the existing line, albeit with the minimum service on it, i.e. line rental only.
The only other way to do it is to port the number over to your own property? However this can only be done if you are on the same exchange.
