New car loan

Options
Hi,
My first post on here so sorry if I've not posted correctly!

From the beginning, I visited a car dealership with the intention to treat myself to a new car. I picked out a car I'd had my eyes on for a while and spoke to a salesman, we discussed some things and then he had a customer waiting so he took my number and said hed ring me the next day to talk figures etc.. 5 days later I went back in because he'd not rang me. He told me he'd forgotten and so we got talking about figures and he got me to sign a couple of bits of paper, scanned my ID etc and said "the system goes down at 5pm every day so I'll go online tomorrow morning and ring you back to sort out the car that you want. Skip 2 months later, a credit search appeared on my credit record, at this point I just ignored it because I thought maybe he'd done it back when I had my ID scanned etc and it had just taken a while to appear. Now, skip another month, I've just had an email from them saying they have news about my new car! I dont know where i stand here if they've ordered me a car because I haven't paid any deposit or signed any finance agreement or even had any communication for 3 months! If they have ordered me a car can I just turn it down? I'm going to go into the showroom tomorrow but just wondered where I stand.

Thanks in advance, I'll try provide more information if needed.

If you haven't agreed to buy a car, then there's nothing to worry about.

Call them to let them know whether you still want to buy a car or not.
  • Just to clarify aswell, I no longer want the car simply because of the amount of messing around I've had and how I've not even been communicated with, this was my first brand new car purchase as a treat to myself and my experience has been ruined. Every time I see the certain car now it grates on me because I just think about the dealers

Also, I have an excellent credit score and I'd easily pass the affordability check so I couldn't cancel it on those grounds.

Your excellent credit score has no bearing on whether you would get a loan.

If you do get a loan, you can withdraw from it within the first 14 days.

Any commitment to buy a car is separate from the funding.
  • So ZX81, I've been reading online that if a vehicle order has been made up and a deposit has been paid you're basically tied up, but seeing as though these appear to have done everything else quietly and not updated me, if they have completed a new car order and I haven't paid a deposit or anything I should be able to walk away fine?

If you haven't committed to buying it (in terms of contract), you can walk away.

If you have, you're committed to buying, regardless of how you choose to fund it. Getting declined for a loan wouldn't void that contract.
  • Ok that's great, I haven't signed any contract apart from some forms about data protection and a credit search form. I'll give them a call and tell them I'm no longer interested.
    Thanks!

Ive worked in a dealership for many years. Just call them up and tell them you want to cancel the order. It happens all the time.

The dealership should have been clear about finance and forms, but you havent signed the actual documents so I wouldnt worry.

    Cancel the order.

And next time be more informed about the car you want to order and listen to what is being said. If you aren't wanting to but then dont waste their time.

The dealer could keep the deposit with proof of costs in ordering that car from the manufacturer or any additional works carried out on behalf of the customer as agreed.

But as there is no deposit then walk away anyway, not many dealers would keep your deposit unless as above you had specified any particular requirements, like pink wheel or something similar.

What happened when you called up to ask how your order was progressing if you say you didn't hear anything ? Dont tell me you didn't bother or just sat there waiting for the phone to ring, surely not ?
