it's illegal for them to discriminate, plus to be honest i havent seen any posts questioning whether christian sites would be fair - i think if i was a muslim i would find this question even being asked quite offensive.
also see thatgirlsam's post above
kirsteen
Edted to add that of course the majority of names will be muslim as it probably has been entered much by customers in the past and they aren't allowed to pick winners from people they *think* are their customers anyway.0 -
Yes, I also personally dont believe that an islamic website would believe that somebody called Ryan has been visiting their website to buy Nasheeds. Im not making the suggestion that they would discriminate on the basis of my religion but it would be more than apparent that I am not a customer or potential customer of their product, and had only visited in order to win an ipod. When they notice the hundreds of people with non islamic names visiting their website after 24/11 at 10:45pm for the first time, it is likely that they will know what is going on and ensure that a likely customer is awarded the item.
I do see where you're coming from and actually thought the same thing when i saw the winners list. But its worth a go isnt it? Who knows a MSE may win!

Yeh dont get me wrong, I have still entered! and sincerely hope that an MSEr wins one! Good luck everyone.
Kirsteenatom - would you be offended if i said that as a male I may not be chosen to win a prize from Now magazine or Closer Diets? or that I would be less likely to win with CITV if im 22 or from Mature times if it asked my age and I said 22? Or that you, assuming that you are a female, were less likely to win from a magazine like FHM? or that you are less likely to win from a local paper in norwich if you live in Newcastle. Im not saying it always happens but im sure it does.0 -
There is no way of telling a person's religion by their name anyway. There are many many Muslims that don't have 'typically' Muslim names. My parents are Muslim & their names are Valerie & Sam!nothing to see here, move along...0

LOL. Yes, you could suggest that any website could break the law and be discriminatory. You suggested however, that although they wouldn't necessarily discriminate on the grounds of race that they might be unethical in only awarding prizes to potential customers.
Many other competition sites don't have potential customers, as they are simply online magazines etc which everyone can read. Even those that do, tend not to be aimed at one gender particularly - a religious service/group/company is in quite a unique situation I believe. Equality legislation mirrors this as belief and faith are treated differently to race, disability, age or gender.
I can see you weren't intending offense, but was just trying to highlight that making the comment you did could be received offensively. It could easily be read that a muslim site was likely to be less ethical in selecting winners.
This subject is something I spend a lot of time on, as I am a diversity manager for university - so it's just natural I would react to this thread!
