Can you recommend a retractable lead.

I've gone through more retractable leads than I care to think about. Wife bought yet another from a German supermarket last week, yesterday on the third outing the lead failed - pulled the lead out of the handle.

Anyone recommend a descent. Before anyone suggests training the dog not to pull, he is very strong willed and a sturdy wee thing, mini Schnauzer.
Don’t be a can’t, be a can.

  • In my experience with retractables - you get what you pay for.
For a small (but sturdy) dog like yours - perhaps a Ferplast Flippy (tape) would do the job? I had one for years that was brilliant with my dalmatian - who doesn't pull as such - but reached the end of the lead on many occasions. Only stopped using it because we went to an 8m lead. Got a Flexi at the moment - but it is on its way out after a couple of years I think so won't get one again.

For normal walking a fixed lead and sturdy harness with a D ring on the chest such Dog GAMES

Retractible leads teach a dog to pull as pulling extends the lead until it suddenly stops. Then the dog pulls harder s pulling worked before.

For free exercise such as at the park use a long line- much safer than a retractable lead.

Having gone through a number of leads I have found the brand 'Flexi' to be the best but only the tape kind. The cheaper chord type with a little bit of tape at the end don't last. Also after walking in the rain always allow the lead to dry, leave it extended fully and this will prolong its life greatly. Something like this Shop around , you might get it cheaper.

    Only the tape type.
The "chord" type are very dangerous, had a few of those wrapped around my legs/my dog's legs when idiot owners can not control their dogs/the leads. And they cut in and it hurts.
Go for the tape tape one - I walk my 40kg German Shepherd (and yes she pulls as she is dog reactive) on the tape one and ha the same one for about 6 years now with no problem.
Obviously too big size for your dog so not posting a link
  • Another vote for the tape Flexi. I've been using them when running on the beach for years; they get sand in them and exposure to sea water, but they keep on working. The only failure point I've noted is that over time the loop of tape that attaches to the clip tends to wear, but of course this isn't a sudden failure; you can see the wear developing and replace the lead (or reinforce the tape) when you think it's bad enough.

I don't use a retractable lead, I use a longer lunge lead type thing.
Takes a bit of getting used to at first so you don't trip over it but is much easier to manage with a very enthusiastic 25Kg bull terrier. Wouldn't go back to a flexi lead now.

All shall be well, and all shall be well, and all manner of things shall be well.

Pedant alert - it's could have, not could of.
