Is WhatsApp really secure?

Hi, EDF have just launched their new WhatsApp contact service and the first time I have tried to use it they have asked for

For data protection purposes and to proceed further with the query, kindly provide your full name, 1st line of address with post code and email address/date of birth/payment method.

The EDF account has been marked as an Official Business Account.

Is it really safe to provide all that personal data via WhatsApp?

Just wondered what people thought?

  • Yes it's encrypted from end to end so messages can't be intercepted (which is why the government aren't happy about it).

Where did you get the info about EDF using WhatsApp? I can't find anything in a quick search on Google for EDF WhatsApp.

I had a quick question and it is probably the fastest response I have ever had from them.

I have the EDF app. I can find a notice in the Help section that says EDF can be contacted by WhatsApp but doesn't give any info about a contact number. So ... where did you find that number?

I checked .. That number is generated from the official EDF app (on Android anyway) so it seems genuine - which was what I was trying to get at. :)

Mmmmmm, they can be intercepted, but not decrypted easily by your average MCDonalds wifi sniffing teen.

There could be a shared keys that you do not know about, and I'd be surprised if there was not some.

Meta data is definitely recorded too.
