Installing Washer Dryer

Hope someone can help as we are less than useless!

Firstly what is the pointy thing under my sink that I connect the WD drain pipe to? It looks like it is sealed off? Do I cut the pointy thing (spigot??) then connect the drain pipe and tighten with the white seal thing or chuck away spigot (??) shove drain hose in then tighten with white stupid seal thing?

Secondly, what is the best way to arrange my WD so as to ensure clean siphoning off water please?! It's a gap next to sink under draining board, there is a gap at the top to allow a hose to reach pipes but the WD drain part come out of the middle bottom of the WD not the top as shown in diagrams!

Thirdly and finally, when a miracle happens and we manage to successfully fit it, does the cold blue tap thing always need to be turned on as I got sprayed in the face (!) and then just decided to turn whole water thing off with stop cap???

I'm sorry to be such a pain, I've never anything like this before and if someone could help me I'd really appreciate it!

Thank you in advance!

Ask someone to plumb it in for you. You're talking about cutting pipes, getting sprayed with water and using odd words, all of which indicate you don't know what you're doing. You're at risk of flooding your kitchen, breaking your new appliance, or both.

If you're insistent on doing it yourself, you need to post some photos and ask people to walk you through it one step at a time.

If the pointy thing looks like the pointy thing on the of this thihg: https://www.screwfix.com/p/mcalpine-appliance-trap-white-40mm/81714#_=p

then you need to undo the knurled nut that is keeping the pointy bit attached. Take the pointy bit outside and cut the sealed end off it. A old handsaw works well for cutting PVC pipe.

You should cut enough off the pointy bit that the waste hose from the WD has about 2.5cm of pointy bit inside it when pushed firmly onto the pointy bit. The pointy bit is a spigot. Refit the spigot to the trap under the sink using the knurled nut.

The best way to arrange you WD so as to ensure clean siphoning off water is to pass the free end of the hose through a hole in the side of the kitchen cabinet (at the back of the cabinet) and push the hose firmly onto the spigot, and then lose the excess hose behind the WD. You may need to drill a hole in the side of the cabinet if the hose won't reach to take the existing route at the top of the cabinet. It is likely that this will result in some the hose forming a U shape below the level that the hose comes out of the machine. While some water will remain in the hose between washes, the only problem with this will be when you need to move the WD. When you take the hose off the spigot, the water in the hose will go all over the floor unless you have a bucket to catch it in.

You don't need to secure the hose onto the spigot, it is designed to be a push fit. Just make sure it is pushed on firmly.

The blue cold tap should be left switched on unless you need to move the WD. It you got sprayed when you turned the tap on, you may have fitted the hose onto the tap without its rubber washer. There should be a rubber washer inside the hose. You may also have not tightened the nut sufficiently.

While you can get someone in to fit the WD for you, and it will be not be too expensive, it is within the skills of the average householder once they know what to do and take care.
The comments I post are my personal opinion. While I try to check everything is correct before posting, I can and do make mistakes, so always try to check official information sources before relying on my posts.
  • Thank you so much, you are an :A My hubby works away and I thought I could do it myself however I don't know the technical terms - thanks so much for explaining it to me!

When it came to the cooker I paid an electrician for that however it's nice to hear that I haven't bitten off too much that I can chew with the WD.

I thought the pointy thing, or should I say spigot now that I'm pretty much an expert! :rotfl: was to be disregarded as it is capped or bunged I think. I tried YouTube but a lot of the videos showed a waste pipe whereas because my apartment is a new build, it's all under the taps instead.

I think I'm over thinking the position of the house etc. There is enough space for it to connect without drilling holes in the side of cupboard, I'm just being too fussy/panicky regarding the the position of the hose. Does the dip/U-shape have to be below the point at which the hose exits the WD if you understand my meaning!

Oh and when I said I got sprayed, there was nothing on the cold fill, I just turned the blue tab thinking I was turning it off whereas I actually turned it on. Into my face. :rotfl:

Thanks so much for your wisdom, I really appreciate it!

Well that was more difficult to upload than it should've been!

    Thanks again!
