Job advertised that doesn't meet the minimum wage.

Hiya.

I've applied for a job and have an interview on Thursday, but I've just done the calculations and the salary doesn't meet the minimum wage. Is it best to turn up anyway and let them know this in the hope that they will offer me a higher salary, or just look for something else? It's a legal job, the area's really not well paid anyway but it's one that I'd really like to work in, and it's not an apprenticeship :(

Yes - ask them . If nothing else it will show that you are observant.
Never pay on an estimated bill. Always read and understand your bill
  • What are the hours and salary?

I would confirm via email or through a telephone call before the interview regarding the pay.

Thank you. It's full time (it doesn't say what the number of hours are, I'm assuming 36 though) for 14k (and they say Law's well paid!). I'd be taking a massive pay drop to work here but I don't want to stay in my current job forever and it'll be helpful experience wise. I've tried looking on a benefits calculator and it won't go past this as it says it doesn't meet the minimum wage.

Isn't the minimum wage per hour? I don't believe there's such a thing as a minimum annual salary.

If you don't know how many hours per week they're offering, how can you know if the hourly rate is below minimum wage?

Full time's 35 hours, isn't it? Just divide the salary by the number of weeks in a year, and then by the number of hours worked. A salary still has to meet minimum wage for your age group.

Gov.uk: "There is no specific number of hours that makes someone full or part-time, but a full-time worker will usually work 35 hours or more a week."

    35hrs a week is just over £14k.

I would be careful how you ask this, you don't want to be accusing them of breasking the law without knowing all the facts.

Before you go to the interview I would phone the HR and get them to clarify how many hours the job is, you can them work out what the hourly rate is.
