Is it worth trying the Ombudsman?

Made a PPI claim to Bank of Ireland re: mortgage.
They have come back to say that on that particular mortgage PPI was never offered by themselves. However they have admitted that they did offer a referral to Legal and General PPI at the time.
Is my claim dead in the water or could I go back to them and pull them up on the fact they DID offer me PPI through an alternative provider (which I believe I did take up) and therefore should be due compensation?
Anybody have any experience with this either way?

I am insane and have 4 mortgages - total mortgage debt £200k. Target to zero = 10 years! (2030)

Is it not L&G that you should have complained to, and are you not now too late?0

Costs nothing to try - were they agents for it or was it effectively "go over the road and that man over there will be be able to sell you PPI"?0

Honestly cant remember - i think it was the bank themselves (well they have admitted that themselves) who offered the referral to L&G so I'm hoping that might be enough to claim.I am insane and have 4 mortgages - total mortgage debt £200k. Target to zero = 10 years! (2030)0

They did not retail you the PPI. They have told you this. So, you need to stop saying that.
Also, just having PPI is not grounds for complaint. Indeed, only around 1 in 10 MPPI complaints actually get upheld. You can still buy MPPI today. Nothing you have said suggests a missale.
The bottom line is that you should have complained to L&G and not the bank. However, you are now past the deadline to complain to L&G.0 -
To answer your question, there is zero point going to the ombudsman in this case.0

Remember we are specifically talking mortgage PPI here.0 -

No one here can definitely predict the result of your complaint, but we can certainly comment on the weakness of it...0 -

If someone is going to put out a statistic like that then it should be backed up with some sort of proof.
I'm not the OP by the way0
