Trojan O vs CG Absolute Return

I am looking to invest part of my SIPP portfolio into a wealth preservation fund.

Initially, I was considering Capital Gearing Investment Trust or Personal Assets IT, however due to premium/discounts and the slightly extra volatility of IT's I think an OEIC equivalent would be better for me in the long term. Therefore, I am now looking at Trojan O or the Capital Gearing Absolute Return Fund.

Does anybody hold either of these funds or is there any positive or negative views on either fund? Any thoughts would be appreciated.

Why are you looking at “wealth preservation” funds.

To lower the risk on my overall portfolio. I am also considering a multi asset fund either VLS20 or maybe 40.

I hold Trojan O, which now apparently is being replaced by Trojan X, Ruffer, and RIT as explicit WP funds and Jupiter Strategic Bond. The only one I am not 100% happy with is Ruffer which has not met its objective over the past 5 years. Trojan O's record is similarly to CGT and I see no reason to go for one in preference to the other. Both do their job. RIT is a very different fund as it has a relatively high % equity so it has perhaps more of a strong nod towards wealth preservation rather than having it as an over-riding objective. However I am happy holding it alongside the others.
  • I hold Troy Trojan X on Hargreaves Lansdown which has an OCF of 0.87% whereas Troy Trojan O has an OCF of 1.02%

Plus there is a 0.25% HL loyalty bonus which somewhat offsets the 0.45% platform fee.

    This is not investment advice.

I have money in both of the IT equivalents.

One thing to maybe keep in mind is that both have discount control mechanisms.

So far as differences I tend to to think of Personal Assets/Trojan as "dumb" and Capital Gearing as a much larger blend of holdings trying to work with one another.

You can see the full holdings of both to take a view on that.

I'd have no issue dumping large amounts of money in either (which I do by my own definition of "large").

I hold Trojan O in my SIPP alongside Trojan Global Equity O and I am happy to hold both in my portfolio.

Are you just looking at random funds or are you looking for a fund for a particular objective? VLS40 has a completely different profile that Trojan.

No I’m not really looking at random funds. I already hold Jupiter Strategic Bond in my portfolio but I also wanted a wealth preservation fund to be alongside this so that I am no longer 100 % equities as I used to be.

I hold CGT and am very happy to do so. I must admit I didn’t know it had an OEIC equivalent in the CG Absolute Return fund. I’ve looked on the Trustnet charting tool and can’t seem to find them listed to look at performance? Can anybody help with this and also explain how the fund differs from the IT in holdings etc?

It's on their offshore site: https://www.trustnetoffshore.com/Factsheets/Factsheet.aspx?fundCode=NYFKT&univ=DC

From what I remember it's similar to CGT but without some of the more illiquid investments.
