Credit Search by Utility Companies....any bad effect ?

1st of all, I am not sure in which section i should put this thread. As, it it related to Credit Report, i put here. sorry, if i did wrong.

Actually My question about credit report search by utility companies. I m here in uk for last 3 years. and from the very begining i am paying all my utility bills which are on my name. I used BT, Tiscali, AOL, NPOWER, EDF ENERGY. but never these companies checked my credit history. And also on my credit report there is no credit account on their name.

But, very recently i switched to British Gas, they made a credit search. Also when i tried to switch my landphone to PostOffice they also want to search credit history. I stopped there. bcoz....

I am little confused. Why these companies now searching credit history ? as these search full credit search, are they really harmfull for a credit history ?Though these are all Utility Credit Search, will these search create any bad effect on my any future Credit card application ?

And, also as these companies checking credit history, will they add any credit account on my credit report later ?

Virgin media and bt did it to me,

Virgin media have left an 'account' on my history that shows my balance, but its always at £0 as i always pay the bill!

But when i took BT two&half years ago, they haven't made any credit search. :S

I have not seen searches on my credit file by supplies such as water, gas etc. However when I switched to BT earlier this year, that showed on my credit file.
