This thread made me realise why they offered me the junior position even though I said that I will have to relocate.

They are having difficulty finding right people for a junior position out in the sticks.

I might as well commute from London for now and switch jobs to city quickly.

Also, this thread made me sad. Vote tactically this election everyone. :)

Why travel at all for now - live in Baldock itself!

I live in a village in Surrey. We have no train station, the nearest town does, it’s a couple of miles away.
I drive so transport isn’t a problem, but the buses are hourly & finish in the very early evening, there are none on Sundays and bank holidays.
We only have a handful of shops in the village, butchers, green grocers, co-op, pharmacy, newsagents & sub post office, & a hardware store.
I love it, but you need a car.

Not sure how voting tactically will change village life and transport. No one has mentioned running more buses through villages or did I miss it?

I think you will find, regardless of which party is in office, village life has gone downhill.

As far as MPs are concerned, everyone is assumed to have access to a car (of course, run on green electricity). Walking and cycling are assumed to be voluntary life choices. I'm one of the ones who doesn't have a car and was looked at rather oddly when I said i didn't have a car to collect a chair with yesterday in a retail shop.

I think you need to look at other locations, somewhere on the edges of a town for example, with what you need in reach. There are villages on the outskirts of busy towns with regular bus routes (I live in a area with such villages).

I lived in Bedfordshire for years.

I loathed driving but was forced to get a car. The winters are really harsh and cycling's just not a winter option. The bus service is sparse.

If you think Bedfordshire winters are harsh, try living in Yorkshire or the Lake District. Bedford winters aren't that bad. For several years we have had hardly any snow and not that many frosty days
If you are querying your Council Tax band would you please state whether you are in England, Scotland or Wales

The problem I have is that for a £1500 net monthly (which is just over national minimum and a lot below national average for my junior accounting profession), I am afraid of being held at this position for longer than necessary.

I am paying £250 per month in a lovely house share with lovely people in south London. With some expenses my monthly stands at £720. I will be paying about the same with travel even if move locally.
    • London - £420 for commute and £250 rent + £100 for all expenses = £720
    • Near Baldock - £450 for rent, £140 commute and £100 for all my expenses = £690

Of course, I don’t have to commute this long if I live locally but something just doesn’t seem right.

I can always attend interviews before going to work and can switch before my 6 months probation is out.

We’ve had some really bad snow some years since I moved to this (Surrey) village in 2006.

You've got a lot of think about.
Are you from London and are your friends and social circle still based there? You might find you're visiting London all the time (your friends won't visit you out in the country, even if they say they will).

If you leave London and change your mind, you're not likely to find as good accommodation as your current extremely cheap flatshare.

I'd commute for the first few months and ask around at work about local accommodation, if you think the job has a long-term future for you.

You won't have the patience to keep that commute forever but you need more time to decide about relocating your home as well as your job. It'll all make more sense in a few months time.
