Tesco have taken 5 lots of payments instead of 1!!

My son asked me to order Coldplay's new album. I found the best deal online Tesco.
He gave me the cash, I used my card.

Husband checked our bank balance today and found 5 lots of £8.05 has been taken out of our account.

Husband wouldn't have noticed 1 lot of £8.09 - which means the surprise Cold play CD for Father's Day is no longer a surprise.

I phoned Tesco and she said I can't do anything until Monday.

So that means they have £37 of my money.

Should I accept that response?
All credit cards paid off.

I think that what they are saying is true as that transactions made over the weekend cannot not be rectified till a working day. Even if you rang up the bank and asked them to get the money from Tesco on your behalf, they will still tell you that nothing can be done till monday. Transactions are just 'collected' over the weekend, and although may show up on real time banking, they dont physically appear on your banking statements till monday. Its a pain in the behind, but you gonna have to wait till monday i guess. However, if this has seriously inconvenienced you in terms of available money as they took out an extra 37pounds, then they should compensate you in someway. And you should push for this. I used to work at a bank, we had to compensate customers when we made an error in debiting more money than we should have.....but only if they customer made a complaint and pushed for compensation.

    Hope this helps

Edited just to add this: Also another reason why they may wait till monday is that they want to be 100% sure that they took out more money then they should have before they refund you. Banks still work on old technology...they have to wait till transactions have updated on monday, so they can physically see the extra money go out of your account.

Yes, thanks for that, very helpful.
The lady on the phone was very nice (which goes a long way when your husband has just accused you of spending willy nilly lol).
I told her the surprise had been spoiled and I was overdrawn - but that my bank does allow me to go overdrawn.
So, I shall see what happens-the lady promised to call me Monday so I will leave it at that.

Also don't forget that it's a bit dangerous to give everybody refund access to the system. They'll have to wait till admin staff are back in on the next working day for the authorised people to issue a refund.

Don't worry about it ... they will sort it out and you will get any costs incurred refunded and probably a few quid/vouchers for the inconvenience. The point about a surprise no longer being a surprise is irrelevant but I am sure they will apologise (besides that Coldplay are rubbish should have got him something from a decent bard such as Vera Lynn or Lena Zavaroni ... I can only assume that hubby and son have currently fallen out :D )

Lena Zavaroni, ha I remember her - I remember being at the shop on the top of my road and someone saying to the shop keeper, "Did you see that young girl singing last night, wasn't she fantastic". Then my cousin Neville came along (he was at University) and bought me a packet of Spangles.

Strange isn't it, I can't remember what I had for dinner yesterday but I remember that.

I disagree with this. I once had this happen to me with a suprise romantic weekend. I complained and we got a great upgrade.

  • claire was there any difficulties online? eg did you submitthe payment and it told you it didnt work so you tried again?

reason i ask is it probably has been authorised only once but tesco thought that the first 4 attempts were declined (most likely because of the system 'timing out') and so kept trying until the got an authorisation.

usually authorisations 'drop' off after 3 working days so you should find that by wednesday 4 of the payments get added back to your balance and one is physically debited.

reason for this is tesco only have 1 authorisation code because that all they thought had worked and so they will only actually claim one payment. the other 4 will go unclaimed.

obviously waiting til wednesday may not be an option either but tesco and your bank can talk between them to sort it quicker

anyway point im trying to make is its probably not their fault and was a delay between tesco and bank which caused the problem (see it often)

Well done, it is always great when this happens, but my point is that they are under absolutely no obligation to do anything, if they do then it is purely a gesture of goodwill going above and beyond what is necessary.
