Faulty camera

Hello please can you help I purchased a £3500 Sony camera back in February I had the camera about 8 weeks and discovered focusing problems I then returned the camera for repair on their recommendation they replaced the motherboard and other components
I received the camera back and it was damaged I sent it back for further repair
I received the camera back and I have used it several time’s for wildlife photography and noticed every time that the issues were still there along with some new ones
I telephoned Sony just under two weeks ago they advised me to reset the camera to factory which I did last week I
I then proceeded to put in my settings to the camera but I left my camera in standby like it is when I walk around with it the camera overheated to the extent I could not touch it Sony has told me not to use it and return it for repair
Please can someone advise me I don’t want this camera repaired again I have asked them for a replacement am I in my rights

Thank you

Unless you bought the camera direct from Sony your legal rights are against whoever sold it to you. Any Sony warranty is in addition to your basic legal rights.

Given the price, was this a consumer purchase or a business one?
  • Hi thank you for your help it was a purchase for my hobby not business so I should contact the shop where I purchase?

    Thank you Steve

Just return to the shop as faulty, you'll get 100% refund. Job done.

    Then try a Fuji :)

As above, return it to the retailer you purchased it from.

Just as an aside, given that the problems are with focussing, when did you last have your eyesight tested...? :D

That all depends on who carried out the initial repairs and if if was Sony, was the retailer advised of the problem prior to this and was it them that advised the OP to contact Sony?

    As the OP states:
so I should contact the shop where I purchase?
It sounds as if the retailer hasn't been made aware of the problem and if this is the case then they still have the legal right to insist that they be allowed to attempt one repair before being required to refund.

And they could wash their hands of it since a third party (sony) has interfered with it (although let's face it they would have sent it to sony for the repair anyway!) before they were allowed to make a descision. Warrenty is only to be used as a last resort.

I don't think that legally, the retailer could simply wash their hands on the matter.
If the camera had been sent to Sony and replaced by them then they probably could as the camera the OP gives them wouldn't be the same one that was sold.

However, they still have the original item and the only way that the retailer could legally refuse to provide a remedy is by proving that the fault was down to misuse rather then a manufacturing defect.
If a 3rd party repairer had tampered with the camera then they may have a case but as it was the manufacturer then I would think that should the matter end up in court, a judge would probably side with the OP.

You are wrong, the law doesn’t say a retailer has to refund 8 months later.

Please educate yourself before mis informing others :)
  • Thank you everyone for your comment I have returned the camera to the shop I will post to let you know the outcome
  • Just heard back from Sony they said the reason the camera overheated is because I left it on and all they can do is repair it I’m going to see what the shop is going to say about it
I did say that I won’t bother to turn on the camera and pretend to take photos in case the camera heats and left it at that
