It is what it is. Try London for a comparison.

Some parts of London are not too bad. I lived in a TW post code (classed as London by many underwriters) and the insurance was pretty much the same as I am now paying living in Hampshire.

Yeah, but is it all that bad? I've driven through some pretty dire parts (Moseley Road for example) but other areas don't seem so bad.

    Alum Rock Road
    Soho Road
    Coventry Road
    Sparkhill Road

    Shall we keep going?

My postcode is very expensive for a town, apparently lots of crash for cash claims. BB2.

The insurance companies can see your quotes, so if you've used your real details expect a lot of questions and proofs of address needed if you now put the address as anything other than Birmingham .

So what? Birmingham has dodgy areas with high crime rates just like every other major town and city in the country.

Back to the OP, a key factor is the flat is in the city centre which will result in higher premiums than the suburbs, same goes for any large city.

The value of the car is pretty much irrelevant as third party claims are the biggest component of car insurance prices. The premium isn't because the insurer is worried about the cost of replacing an 11 year old Citroen, it's because they're worried about the risk that he'll cause an accident which cripples someone for life, leading to a payout of millions. He's just as likely to do that in an 11 year old car as an expensive new one. In fact he's probably more likely to do it in the old car, as it won't have so many modern safety features and is more likely to be in poor mechanical condition than a new one.

Thanks everyone for all of your replies.

I can understand that city centres are more risky than quieter town centres, but the quotes we'd received really did seem like daylight robbery.

I was helping out my son, who has a very busy and stressful life, because I am retired, consider myself to be a decent human being and I frequently help others.

When my son came home from work tonight we talked it through, he phoned his current insurer, had a really nice chat to someone who also cared and negociated a "fully legit" deal for the amazing price of £370! Job done, great result :T:T:T
