Hyundai i20 clutch issues BE AWARE

My i20 is 5.1/2 years old. after approx 1 year, 5000 miles, clutch started slipping due to leaking oil seal between gearbox and clutch housing. Fortunately the dealer repaired it on warranty. Now failed again six months out of warranty and 21,000 miles and the oil seal is now obsolete!!
Now requires complete new bell housing to replace an oil seal!!!
So the total repair will now cost over £1000 !!
Looking on the internet this appears to have not been an unusual fault on the i20 so if you are thinking of buying one second hand BE AWARE and check for oil leak underneath.
Presumably the new models have the modified parts so may not have the same problems. I took the time to email the CEO at Hyundai UK
but to date not even received a response!!!

Looks like there are plenty of similar cases online.
Seal "obsolete" though? Without going into it there seem to be plenty online, and seals are mostly generic anyway like bearings.
  • If you have a link for oil seal please advise thanks

Easy enough to search, but this is the first that came up.

You really need the makers number though to ensure they match. As well as checking that's actually the right part.

Point being that although a maker may say something is "obsolete" it ain't necessarily so.

Most manufacturers buy in oil seals ,bearings etc so the chances are you will be able to buy one from a local supplier, they normally have the size on them ie
    100x 80x 10 - 100mm outside dia. 80 mm bore 10 mm deep.
  • Thanks for input, garage phoned this evening and have located an oil seal, at least I won’t have to pay for bell housing, but still an expensive repair, because the seal is fitted on the gearbox side - so gearbox has to be stripped and reassembled!
