Calling money super market (is this a good idea)?

Called money supermarket (site below) to compare my economy 7 deal. The lady offered to change from Ebico (who I am with) to Green Network Energy. They werent the cheapest but I heard Scottish power etc had poor customer service.

Is there any risk of using this kind of service. I am giving them my personal details. What are they getting out of it? I am 70% night use. Storage heaters.

There's a big risk that you won't get the best rates. Although Money Supermarket is Ofgem accredited, it certainly doesn't show all the companies and tariffs, even if you click on 'Show me widest range of tariffs*'.

In its infinite wisdom Ofgem does allow this restricted range to be shown, but sites that don't show the full market are supposed to provide a link to the Citizens Advice site. I couldn't find this, nor the footnote to which the asterisk refers. It probably warns that only companies that pay commission are promoted.

Better to use Citizens Advice and Which? instead. You can compare customer service ratings here.

Always compare annual costs using annual kWh consumption from actual meter readings, never estimates. Ignore any claimed savings: the Ofgem approved way of calculating savings is crazy.

After calling three of the companies on the list and their bad customer service, Ive decided to stay with Ebico who have good customer service even though Ill be paying an extra £100

The only 'risk' is that when you call a comparison site, as opposed to using their website yourself, if that they often only advise you those suppliers & tariffs they will get paid for in the event you decide to go ahead with their suggestion.

Why not sign up to the MSE CEC? You'll get the same info as you would from MSM, (as they use MSM for their data source), you can view the whole of market to see how affilated suppliers compare to non-affilitated suppliers, and if you still want to switch to GNE (or any other affiliated supplier/tariff), MSE will share that commission with you in the form of cashback :money:

Wrong. Neither CEC nor MSM show all suppliers (see Post 2).

There's also a risk if you go direct to suppliers such as British Gas. They will gave a fake quotation if you have an Economy 7 meter: they ask only for your total electricity consumption and will make an unjustified and arbitrary assumption about the percentage used at night.
