Perhaps you should ask for advice on the property reports to see if they are as bad as you think they are rather than just standard surveyors covering their bums reports?

The surveyor has been great, and I'd strongly recommend everyone uses one. As much as they nitpick, it's information worth having in my eyes. I'd rather know than not know and when the cost of the survey is 0.1% of the cost of the house. On the single house we pulled out of due to survey, they found major structural problems with the main walls, roof and an unsafe/illegal loft conversion, which the seller has since begun fixing (we drove past a few weeks later and seen the work taking place). Not having a survey would have resulted in us buying those problems and dealing with them in the future.

For the other property we liked, the survey came back ok. That fell through due to other issues with the property and plans for 274 houses being built nextdoor to it starting next year.
  • I have no idea of the area of the country in which your property search is,but you could find it a little challenging finding a rental property where you only want to stay for 6 months.

I am a LL in an area where rentals are very scarce at the moment and if I'm honest the LL has the pick of tenants.Given that the new fee structure surrounding tenancies also may be seen to put the charges to the LL as opposed to the tenant its meant that 6 month initial contracts are now rare and have been replaced with the 12 months.

This may not be the case in your area but you may need to be mindful about how you approach a 6 month fixed term let.
