I've got to paint bare plaster but what is the correct way of doing it because the last time I painted over new plaster it didn't adhere to the plaster in places and a few places the paint started to crack.

Ive always done a couple of mist-coats, 1 coat of a mix of 60/40 paint/water, then i do another of about 70/30 paint/water, then your top coat.
Thats what ive always done and it looks great.
Everyone will tell you something slightly different, some advise using PVA instead of mist-coats, but I've never tried it.
The reason your paint cracked before is the fresh, dry plaster sucked all the moisture from the paint, causing it to peel off the walls.0 -
Ignore anyone who advises putting PVA on your walls before painting.
Mist coat the plaster, the simplest solution is to use something like Screwfix bare plaster paint instead of faffing around diluting contract matt (and everyone always says different things when it comes to the ratio of water to paint).
I find two thin coats of bare plaster paint (instead of one heavier coat) with a some snagging in between coats (fill any noticeable defects, lightly sand any snots or runs) with the aforementioned paint does a fine job with little mess. It looks a little translucent when you apply it but it dries very opaque.0 -
We recently had our ceilings skimmed and I used Screwfix bare plaster paint. I'm no professional painter but I found it to be amazingly good and far easier with less mess than trying with a watered down mist coat.0

Just to be aware, it looks like Screwfix have recently discontinued their legendary straight-to-plaster paint (product code: 51004) and replaced it with a much lesser product, according to the reviews. Shame, really..
It looks like Wickes do a similar product but I can't comment on it, having never used it.0 -

Dulux Plaster Sealer is excellent but it is quite expensive.0
