The Extra Energy Muddle

I was an Extra Energy customer when they ceased trading last November.

This week I have received a Final Statement with a balance owing of some £722.
  • Since they ceased trading their on-line portal has no longer been available - I have no access to statement history or meter readings or even the details of the tarrif I was on.
  • The Smart Meter they fitted is still in the property despite asking the new supplier to replace. It is not able to be read electronically by the new supplier and there is no means of reading the meter manually - I have no knowledge of my energy consumption.
  • I thought the supplier had an obligation to monitor your consumption and adjust monthly payments to ensure large debit balances were not accrued.

Can anyone advise me what the best means to dispute this statment might be and also where do I actually stand? I'm assuming there will be a lot of people in the same boat as me.

If you have no evidence to dipute the bill, you have little chance of success.

I don't agree that "there will be a lot of people in the same boat as" you.

Most people ensure that they keep their own records, rather than rely upon access to the suppliers site, particularly when that supplier has indicated it is ceasing to trade.
Even when a supplier has not indicated their intention to cease trading, it is quite common for statements/bill to disappear or be replaced.

So all you can do now is check the final reading used corresponds to the start reading used by the new supplier, check the calculation and tariff used (if you remember those details)

If all is in order, not much else you can do except pay.
