Savings Goals: House Deposit: £15,000/£15,000; Christmas 2019 Savings: £450/£600

Soon to be on my journey of renovating a house on a budget :)

Put your bed/s together first so you can fall into it at the end of the day!

Have a takeway and some bubbly before bed.

Pack an essentials box and know where it is! Include:

    - change of clothes and toiletries (like an overnight bag)
    - bedding
    - kettle, mugs, teaspoon
    - packet of biscuits
    - plate and set of cutlery each (for takeaways!)
    - important docs you might need in the first 48 hours

Basically, stuff to keep you going until you've done some unpacking. :)

Remember to read the meters (elec and gas, and water if it's accessible) and note the readings. You don't have to phone the suppliers on move-in day - you can do it in the coming days. But you will need to know your opening meter readings for when you open accounts with them.

Check lights are working in key rooms before it gets dark.

If using a removal company, have extra mugs and biscuits to hand to keep the team sweet. :)

I'll be honest - you'll get 19 responses from people telling you to change the locks but I've never done that. :o But definitely check that all doors do lock so you know you're secure at night.
  • You might want to make sure you have a hoover and some cleaning essentials handy - all depending on how clean (or not) they have left the house.

My house was a s-hole when we got the keys but luckily we weren't moving in for another week so had time to give it a good clean.

Hopefully they will have left it clean for you but if not you'll want to have a quick whip round each room before getting the furniture in.

Don’t forget tea, coffee, sugar and lots of milk plus mugs and plates. I sometimes make sandwiches/snacks and put them in a big cool bag.

What removal men eat/drink will vary. We’ve had some who didn’t want anything (not even choccy bikkies :rotfl:) and others who’ve devoured tons of bikkies plus all my home made cake.

For a long move I put in things like bread and bacon, can’t beat a bacon sandwich.

Take your bedding in the car. As soon as the beds are in the house, make them up, you won’t regret it!

    Good luck with the move

    1. Declutter months in advance
    2. Sell anything unused/unwanted.
    3. Give away(freecycle etc) anything that has life in it but no real value.
    4. Pack up and box items you seldom use (books, dvd's, CD's) a good month before moving.
    5. Always give yourself double the amount of time you think on the last day to do anything, it always takes a lot longer than planned for.

Take a bucket of cleaning stuff with you in the car, the removal lorry may well park up for a lunch break and you will have an hour or so to clean the new house before it is cluttered.

I realise that and should have mentioned it in my post, the problem is asking the day before is pretty poor planning on the OP's part, however anyone who might be moving in the near future the advice is hopefully relevant and useful.
