The insurance company have said I am liable as I am the policy holder.
The judge, when sentencing, asserted that as the MIB would pay out to the victim, he would convert any monetary penalties into a custodial sentence.
My son was working a full time job before the sentence and planning to pay me so I could pay the claim.
Now he has lost his job and won't be so easy to get another with a record.
Therefore, the judge's ignorance and refusal to believe me leaves me as a victim also as I have very little money.0

The judge said he was sending a tough message with this sentence to all those who take cars.
He ignored probation recommendations, and character references, agreed he was suffering psychiatric symptoms, but that is no excuse he said0

You're forgetting the injury to the pedestrian, I'm sure he stopped at the scene and wasn't under the influence of anything.0

Why would they when your insurance was in force covering the vehicle at the time?0

Why would the OP have to pay? Her car was stolen (by the son). Her insurance may pay the injured person and recover the funds from the thief (sin) but not the OP since she was also a victim of her son’s criminality.
Her car wasn't stolen. Theft involves an intention to permanently deprive. Hence the offence of TWOC. The son (based on what we know) is not a thief, but he is a criminal.
OP - this experience must have been terrible for you. Not just the insurance claim, but feeling responsible for your son ending up in prison. My sympathies. Sounds like you need proper legal advice. Maybe the CAB or a fixed fee interview with a local solicitor.
 How much is the claim?0

As a victim of crime do you not get compensated? And for the damage to the motor?0
