I have a guarantor, and that also wasn't good enough!0

Well done on being sober!
Like someone else said I am sure you will have better luck with something like openrent where they can take into account your particular circumstances and see that for X many (10s of?) Months you have been bringing in a good income and managing your money without issue (including paying off existing debt).
I dont have any particular advice just that I know plenty of people with very poor credit history who rent their homes (not house share)...and they got there somehow.
Best of luck.0 -
You have to remember that the letting agents talk to the landlords about tenants applying to rent their properties. Landlords get to choose their tenants the agents don't choose them they just advise.
If you are being told that you need a guarantor that is because that particular landlord has requested it with the information that they have received from the letting agent about your particular financial situation.0 -

And even having a guarantor doesn't guarantee you'll get the property, as uplock135 has found.0 -

The other big issues are that many Landlords use some type of rent guarantee insurance
Of course they are most unlikely to be able to get it if they take you on.
Also a new CCJ if you default will not impact you as much as it would someone with a clean credit history so they will likely be much more careful which makes them more attractive as a tenant
A Mortgage should be easier to obtain as the funder has an asset if you default .
A landlord has a huge pain in the neck if you decide not to leave
I hope you get sorted as I do know what bit is like to be in your shoes a long time ago0 -
The thread is a month old - I suspect the OP has resolved things.0

My letting agent asked for 6 months payslips, didn't bother with a credit check. In her words 'I'd have no tenants if I did'0
