Neil, I have managed to create the map, with a 9 mile radius from Kings Statue Weymouth. BUT, there isn't a great deal of detail showing. The sort of thing I envisage is a compass (archaic) drawn round an map, showing towns/villages etc.

Yeah this might be because of the way Google Maps works, if you tell the above site to draw a circle 10 miles around a certain point and then zoom in you will lose most of the radius and the outer towns and villages.

This may be one of those situations where you'll have to get a physical A-Z out, copy the pages in question and then draw on the copies.

The electronic version of above: You could do individual screen shots at the resolution you want, then cut off the borders where the text and other unwanted graphics are, then with about a 20% overlap join them together either as layers in a photo editor like Paint.net, or get them to automatically join with MS ICE. That overlap must be about 20% or more than the top of the place your are interested in, so the 12 mile mark

With Ice would probably will need equal size pictures that for a rectangle say 3 wide and 4 deep =12 screen captures, not 10, or 11 photos because the last ones does not contain the info you want, must be a rectangle

Once it is done and saved in full resolutions, you can always cut and shrink it, but once shrunk, the finer detail will often be lost if expanded again

Here's another one to try. Don't know if it's any better or worse than the one above but have a look and see.
