Natwest/RBS 0% balance transfer card eligibility

Hi folks,

Interested in the RBS 0% balance transfer card mentioned on the best credit cards section of the site.

I live in Scotland so would apply for the RBS card as opposed to the Natwest one. I am an existing RBS customer with a current account, savings accounts and a credit card.

I did the eligibility check however and the checker only appears to check you against the Natwest card. It's coming back as I'm not eligible - so 0% chance of acceptance for this card. This could either be because I have an existing card with RBS or that I'm not eligible for Natwest because I live in Scotland. Any ideas?

I could cancel my RBS card to apply for this one.

Thanks

Janine

  • Could be for any reason - no one knows why but the lenders.
  • I have found the eligibility checkers to be about as useful as knowing your 'credit score'. (ie not at all). If it were me, and I knew all the data in my credit files were both positive and accurate, then I would just go ahead with an RBS application.

Yeah my credit score is 999 so it's not that (unless it's too good?!) :rotfl:

Just a bit wary of applying after I saw that incase it means I would have a rejected application on my file for some reason.

    Thanks

No, I meant the data in your three credit files. A lender only considers the data within your files. They do not see your '999 credit score' and do not use it. :)

Your credit score could be 99999999 or even 0 for all a lender cares - they don't see the made up CRA scores.

And all that will be on your file is a search - rejections are not recorded anywhere.

If you already bank with RBS you could do the obvious and pop into a branch/call them to discuss this and try to establish why you are apparently not eligible for the card you want.
Whilst your 999 credit score means nothing as has already been said, it is nevertheless indicative that your credit files contain nothing really bad and your accounts are being maintained in good order and therefore makes me think that the 'not eligable' is being caused by a factor such as the fact that you already have a credit card with them.
I assume that you realise that you will not be able to transfer the balance of the existing RBS credit card to the new card at 0% and that you actually have a balance on a different card that you want to transfer?
It is the outright 'not eligable' rather than a low acceptance chance or a decline on application which is making me think this is not a credit report type issue.
