Meetup is a genuine site to meet people for events etc :)

I use it locally off and on myself.

I'd never heard of it but someone recommended it yesterday on another thread:

Have a look on https://www.meetup.com/ there is normally groups in a surrounding area which have similar interests, eg walking/cycling or science or just meeting in the pub

I use it for work related meetups and networking. I can confirm it's 100% legit. There's no charge for joining the site but the events themselves are individually organised so there could be a charge for going along to some.

I tried it as I need some friends. My nearest group is 3 hours away and my nearest group that I'm interested in is even further. Tried to start my own locally.... wanted £10 a month. It's not a scam but it is in it for the money

Collect £1/person from everyone attending meets to cover costs, which is what the group I have attended a few times does. It's a commercial site so they are bound to want money to run the service and pay staff somewhere,

Given that there are dozens, possibly over 100 groups in the city near me (Bristol) and in three hours I could get to Manchester or Brighton, or past Swansea or to Land's End, I'm wondering where you live if you can't reach any in under that time. Unst?.

What are your hobbies and interests?

Are you on Facebook? If so, join some local groups that are relevant to your interests. It's what I have done and built up a circle of friends (I also started from scratch nearly 3 years ago).

I joined FB reluctantly specifically to look for relevant local groups, spend months hunting...
It's a small town whose group hobbies are drinking and football/rugby/shinty/ other pointless team sports.

I will add as a disclaimer to my previous comment that I live in London. I'd imagine outside of the major cities the site becomes a lot less useful.

I've found meetup really useful when travelling/moving to a new city, The 10 pound a month is to be an organizer, I don't think they are in it for the money per say however its a big website and its global, which is going to cost for hosting and if needed a specific server(s) then any employed people they may have like customer service if the site is down, Tech support etc.

One of the groups I went to when back in the UK had a 3 pound per month fee at the talks this went towards the meetup any speaker fees/travel and then for new AV equipment.
Thanks to money saving tips and debt repayments/becoming debt free I have been able to work and travel for the last 4 years visiting 12 countries and working within 3 of them. Currently living and working in Canada
