  • Nationwide do offer manual reviews for credit card applications.

People on here have had them done.

If you message them through online banking if you have some other account or product with them already they provide a number for the credit card team to speak to.

I thought that all creditors will do a manual review if requested...
I work within the voluntary sector, supporting vulnerable people to rebuild their lives.

    I love my job

  • I have now been told in branch and on the telephone that Nationwide do not do manual reviews.
It is very possible that the staff do not know what they are talking about, and that wouldn't surprise me.
But my job is in compliance and I put in a formal complaint to NW earlier today.
    We shall see what emerges

I sincerely doubt that a highly paid professional earning the 'ridiculously high' salary claimed by the OP would be posting what is being posted by the OP and therefore suspect that either the whole thing is made up or this income comes from other than reputable sources.
I have yet to quite comprehend why, when you already have this charge card that makes waiting staff and hotel clerks saliviate at the sight of it, you are so anxious to obtain a Nationwide credit card.

Just get your wages paid into another bank and apply for a card from them.

A final word to the OP.
You say that your defaults occurred 5 years ago. In that case they will be gone from your credit files at some point during the next 12 months.
In view of the difficulties that you appear to be experiencing and your refusal to consider an application to a sub prime lender, I would suggest that you wait it out until your credit files are clean.
Applicable both to if you do apply to a sub prime lender now or a mainstream lender when your credit files are clear in a years time, be careful with the level of income claimed. Vanquis, for example, will probably simply not believe that they are receiving an application from somebody earning such a high salary and will almost certainly demand proof of income. Similarly, as your private bank does not report to CRA's, the CATO figures will not be being reported and it will therefore be impossible to verify if you have the account turnover that such an income level would imply. So I would strongly suggest having your income paid into a current account which does report, be it the huge salary mentioned or just the wages from your daytime job, so that lenders will be able to see some CATO figures to back up your claimed income level.
  • Good question .... Partly they are a bit embarrassing to use. To quote PG Wodehouse "It was the particular boast of Barribault's Hotel that it would make the wrong sort of customer feel more like a bit of cheese, and a very cheap, yellow sort of cheese, than any other hotel in London."

My Vanquis card doesn't say Vanquis on it. Very discreet, just a silver/grey card with Visa on it :rotfl:
  • Exactly.
OP needs to learn to cooperate and realise they don’t just given stuff because they want it so badly to impress the maître d‘ at Claridges.

I have what you might call a first world problem. Not even a problem, really, more of a question.
5 years ago I had to default on some credit cards and a loan. All the outstanding defaults were settled a year later when my circumstances changed.
For the past 4 years I have been in a reasonably secure job with an excellent income (top 1%), have a few hundred K in savings, 5 figures a month free income after costs, and my credit record over the 4 years has been impeccable. The past few years I have been with a private bank, which I cannot fault, they provide excellent personal service and have given me a charge card with a very high limit. However, they do not share any of their customer data with credit reference agencies, so I am invisible, although my credit score has gone from very bad to fair/good.
Does anyone know of a mainstream credit card provider that would be willing to have a sensible human conversation and consider overriding the automated "computer says no" response which those old defaults generate? Obviously NewDay, CapOne and Avant will say "yes" but I would hope to do a bit better. I don't need the credit but would like the visibility.
A minor whinge is that MSE lists cards that say 90% but soft searches on those always say no. Obviously it is those old defaults but I think that MSE could improve its algorithms to be more accurate.

You're entitled to that "sensible human conversation" that you speak of, however bear in mind that these days, computers are relied upon to do right by the business. In other words, even upon manual review, they will mainly be looking at reasons not to lend to you. If your defaults etc. are historic and have an impeccable record since then, it is technically possible to have a computer decision overturned, although as I said, in most cases, computers are still relied upon and so overturning is usually reserved for errors in the automated process or a significant oversight.
Not sure I agree with you on that. Waiters and hotel clerks are on the whole tremendous snobs and I have seen them salivating over Amex Centurions and even my own private bank charge card. Flash an Aqua or CapOne and they instantly know to keep an eye on you as someone who will probably steal the ashtrays or not leave a tip.
But however entrancing it is to wander unchecked through a garden of bright images, are we not enticing your mind from another subject of almost equal importance?
Specifically the only question I have asked here, which is does anyone know of a mainstream credit card provider that will have a sensible discussion rather than just going by its computer algorithms?

I worked in a London hotel for a while and whilst, as human nature dictates, we can tell apart the rich from the working class, we never treated customers differently because of their "class" or what payment method they used. Whether it be a Vanquis credit card or a Centurion, as long as they had the funds, it was no problem for us.

Our base pay was good enough, so whilst tips were a commodity, any gratuity we received were much appreciated and never automatically expected. We provided the level of service expected of us equally.

    Good question
The APR is of no account as I always settle in full
Partly the sub-primes have low individual limits. I travel a lot on business and they are useless for that.
Partly they are a bit embarrassing to use. To quote PG Wodehouse "It was the particular boast of Barribault's Hotel that it would make the wrong sort of customer feel more like a bit of cheese, and a very cheap, yellow sort of cheese, than any other hotel in London."
But rather than exploring the ins and outs of stuff I already know, my original question (so far unanswered) was whether anyone knew of a mainstream card that was willing to have a sensible face to face or telephone conversation.
Embarassing to use is absurd. I have a plethora of "high end" cards and very often I am using my "subprime" Aqua card as its the best card to use at the time regrading cashback.
Thats just a ridiculous sentiment. If you are that worried about a card (that noone but you will ever see) then why not get a metal curve card and use that with all your sub prime cards lying behind it.

But honestly if you have gone from debt to a "ridiculously high" income and actually care about what card you carry for snobbery purposes I can only imagine you haven't actually worked for your money. You must have won the lottery or had an inheritence. Because anyone who has actually worked hard for their money doesn't give a damn about credit card brand snobbery.

I know a multi multi millionaire and he almost exclusively uses his ASDA credit card. Even staying in the Ritz. Why? Because that's his local supermarket and well he has nothing to prove to anyone. He knows his wealth and worth and doesnt need to pretend anything to anyone. Real money doesnt brag. There is a reason a 50k a year young salesman wear the blingiest watch and the shinniest suit yet Bill Gates wears a polo shirt and Chinos.
