whirring noises from peugeot 307

Hi don't know if anyone can help and will take it to the garage, but if there is a chance we can fix it ourselves we will give it a go.

anyway my 2001 307 is making a whirring noise (similar noise you would get if you stuck a piece of cardboard in a bike wheel or fan) when i accelerate it gets louder and faster as I go faster. does not make the noise when idling and when i put the clutch in to change gear the noise stops. Does not effect the temp gauge or water level.

any ideas what it could be?? and is it ok to keep driving it??

Are you able to locate it? Is it from the wheels or engine bay?

One possibility is an incorrectly tensioned alternator drive belt.
  • If the noise goes when you depress t'clutch then it sounds like the clutch release bearings...
  • it is difficult to say where it is coming from but i feel a vibration from the mid to left of the car when driving if that makes sense
  • If there is vibrations then it could be a gearbox mounting or, well, anything to be honest lol. Drive shafts maybe...?

I think there was a starter motor/alternator problem with these models. Might have even been a recall, not sure.

  • The alternator has an over run facility, which often is the cause of a whirring noise. We often get people coming in moaning about this...

But that wouldnt give a vibration as per post #4...
  • just wanted to say thanks for your posts. Turns out it is the gearbox and i need a new one  (luckily i work in a hospital for the heart attack i had when i got the price). he's gonna do the clutch as well so hopefully that is the end of it.

    thanks again

unless you have already gone through with it smileykylie, it could be worth shopping around. Prices vary quite alot between garages.
  • Thanks, my mechanic is usually pretty good and used by a lot of people I know. I trust him so am going with him.

    Thanks anyway
