I have a Samsung tablet which seems to charge faster when using the original cable than when using a 3rd party one. Is that possible? I haven't actually tried timing charging but certainly get the impression of that happening.

Yes it is more than likely possible, the 3rd party cable probably has a higher resistance limiting the charging current0 -
Thanks for the answers. They make sense, even to me.:-)0

If that was the reason then I would expect the cable that takes longer to get warm0

What kind of USB, -B or -C? My iPhone and iPad Pro charge much faster using an Apple USB-C to Lightning cable and a USB-C charger then when I use a 3rd party cable.0

cable length (actually thickness) does make a difference. there is also a usb cable for some phones that allows faster charging, and is done by shorting the two data lines. Ask google0

My phone displays "Slow charging" when using USB and simply "Charging" when AC mains. Also I do notice the difference in time to 100% when using USB.0

If you charge from another device's USB port, the current is normally limited to 500mA .
The supplied charger for a device will be able to supply the correct matched maximum current for charging, which could be over 2A.
However, at such small currents, the cable itself is highly unlikely to affect the situation.0 -
Yes Definitely, I have a metre that measures voltage it sits between devices and shows me for different devices etc. It is not the only factor, Apple kit controls what Amps are used.0

I would disagree, I ran a smartphone on a long car journey using the sat nav & a radio app at the same time, with 1 cable the phone discharged (if I switched off 1 of the apps the phone would charge up ok), I then changed the usb cable & the phone would charge up ok using both of the apps.ANURADHA KOIRALA ??? go on throw it in google.0
