Smartphones no roaming wi fi connection only

How can you stop a smartphone roaming when surfing the net and make sure it only connects to the internet with a wi fi connection. It is probably very simple but I have just updated to a smartphone and do not want it to be subject to running down my PAYG credit very quickly. Thank you

On an Android phone, switch off Mobile Data.
Go to Settings/Data Usage/Mobile Data - OFF.
The phone will then only connect to WiFi.0 -
You might want to investigate whether you can set a cap on data use to ensure no nasty surprises. Vodafone and Tesco, for example allow this, and there are others who also do. That way you don't have to turn the data off and not use it.0
