Three free Data Reward sim is the cheapest solution. Gives you 200MB free data every month. As long as you register and use some data every 6 months it will stay active. It costs nothing so you can order one and check network coverage in your area and whether phone is unlocked. If you want to send txts or make calls you can top up, same as a payg sim.
Personally, I would not top up the sim, but use WhatsApp app for voice or txts, if your family have the app. Great for short videos of the grandkids.

Don't forget the correct size of sim card appropriate for your phone.
Are there still networks not issuing trio SIMs ?

...... putting a £15 credit on it as I would only use the phone or texting in emergencies. .
You say "only" but then say
The internet use on the smart phone will be very useful to me.
    but as Colin Maybe says

Just in case it wasn't clear previously, if you use it for internet use away from WiFi then it will come off your credit and it will burn through £15 in no time. You can of course use any internet hotspots such as at many supermarkets etc.

So, once sorted with a SIM, firstly reset the phone in settings / system / factory reset, then turn off 'mobile data' (that means mobile internet on your phone - wifi will still work) and away to go.
