Dulux paint mixing completely off

I am currently painting my house using Dulux trade paint among other things. We are trying to match the skirting, and yes I am completely in the view this is difficult to do etc.

I originally tried to match some skirting I had pulled off the wall, but this came up to dark and I used it to pain a new bathroom instead. Very nice I might add.

We since got some testers and white cotton came up as a reasonable match. I got a litre made up at the local trade centre, came home, painted some skirting and it has come up whiter than the brilliant white walls. It is clearly off the colour that was meant to be mixed as there is no yellow tint at all. It comes up as absolute white on the the swatches.

I am unsure if I should be kicking up a fuss or just accept that I need to repaint all of the doors and skirting in the house?

  • I would paint them all. The freshly painted ones will look fresher then the others anyway.

Your doors and skirtings have discoloured.

They were probably white and have yellowed. The law changed on oil based paints and the first batches of white paint produced after that all seemed to turn yellow.

You'll benefit from them being fresh.

'Matching' will vary with the finish (matt/ silk/ satin/ gloss/ extra light reflective particles), the lighting (natural direct/ natural indirect/ various artificial), cleanliness, decorating prep and other age-related or wear-related factors. So appearance can differ wall to wall, room to room, emulsion to satinwood.

My city centre flat was painted throughout with the same three paints (ceilings, walls, woodwork) by the developer fifteen years ago, but does not look it any more! :p

I clean regularly with liquid sugar soap - to lift greasy traffic pollution as well as the usual grime - and this affects the colour and finish of paints in different ways. Overall the walls have 'stood the test of time' miles better than the ceilings or the woodwork.

Cannot see how it is possible to match all your walls to all your woodwork, or match old woodwork to new woodwork, without starting afresh. Too many variables IMO.

Having said all that, if you specifically ordered 'White Cotton' and are clear that you did not receive that shade, do return the product. Dulux is not cheap!
