First Credit Card Advice

My 19 year old daughter wishes to start to build a credit rating and is looking for a credit card that will allow her to do that. She will only use it for petrol and will then clear it as soon as the bill comes in. Just looking for some recommendations for a card that is likely to accept a 19 year old with no credit rating? She is at university so only works part time in retail earning approximately £6k per year.

Thanks in advance.

  • Her own bank, or one of the sub prime providers, such as aqua or Vanquis.
  • There's a Credit Card Eligibility Calculator on the main MSE site. She might find that helpful. (Look under Cards & Loans.)

Why will she only use it for petrol? Why will she settle it as soon as the bill comes in?
What is wrong with her using it for all her normal spending, setting up a full balance direct debit and keeping the money in her current account possibly earning interest and helping her to maintain a healthy looking bank balance for a month?

To be fair, no one has a "credit rating".
    You have credit HISTORY.

Try a sub-prime lender, use it to buy whatever each month, then pay it back in full after each statement.
