Will - Inheritance help

Hi All

Just wanted some info.

My father recently passed away and he has a will in which myself and my 2 brothers will inherit his estate equally.

One of my brothers has been named as a executor, he has said he has instructed my dads solicitor to do probate.

I am named in the will along with my 2 brothers.

I am not sure what happens now as I have not heard anything from my dads solicitor and my brother who is the executor hasn’t updated me as things are a bit tense.

Should my dads solicitor contact me as I am named in the will as a beneficiary?

Who will make sure I am given the correct inheritance and who will provided me the funds will it be my brother or the solicitors?

Any help would be great

Thanks

Jay

It depends - if the solicitor is doing all the executor work then it could take ages +++ and all you will hear is when you get money from them and as you are a residual beneficiary you will get a copy of the estate accounts

If brother is doing the exec work and has just got the solictor doing the probate application then it could be quicker, even then could be ages and you would get money from brother + copy of the estate accounts

There is no overarching body that checks on what has happened to estates, you have to rely on the accounts

Will I get estate accounts from the solicitor?

These things take time. Particularly if there is a property to sell or lots of investments then up to a year is not unusual. My MIL died in December and the property is now back on the market after a sale fell through.

The solicitor will not be sending you anything - all communication will come from the executor. In my case my BIL (as executor) has only been in touch a few times.

Remember, if it's a solicitor handling probate, then every time they have to do something, answer the phone, read and reply to a letter or email, it'll be charged for, to the estate!! ie, your pocket!!
How's it going, AKA, Nutwatch? - 12 month spends to date = 3.24% of current retirement "pot" (as at end December 2025)
