Good travel card which is a Visa (not Mastercard)?

We are off to Argentina soon, and Visa is more widely accepted than Mastercard.

My usual travel cards are Mastercard, and looking online I can't find any that are Visa.

Someone did mention Revolut, but when I finally figured out how to contact their customer services, they said that they randomly allocated you a Visa or Mastercard (odd!) so that's no good.

Please can anyone help with a Visa travel card? Thanks.

Are you sure about this? I was in Argentina nearly 15 years ago and used Mastercard without any problems. I've never encountered a merchant anywhere who accepts Visa but not MC or vv, but maybe that's just my good luck.

Yes definitely - this is based upon recent experiences of people who have been there on various travel forums.

It's not that nowhere accepts Mastercard there, some places certainly do. But it's not as widely accepted as Visa, so would rather take one of those with me.

Strange. Are they still the equivalent of the UK pre-duality where accepting Access cards and Barclaycards required separate merchant agreements?
  • You can definitely use MasterCard all over Argentina, don't worry. There are just a few small places here and there that don't accept any credit cards, but I've never been in a visa-only scenario having been travelling there for 9 weeks. It's important to carry cash as some places can be a bit weird about cards and they mark up the costs to discourage you. Asked to show passport about 80% of the time.

See the network ATM coverage in the are you're visiting on the MC website, it should give you an idea of how MC friendly the town or city is.

If you look out for one of the many promotions for Revolut
(i signed up via facebook and got a £10 bonus)
it should tell you in the advert which card you will be applying for, in my case visa, as like you I wanted a choice.

    Nationwide Select?

I'd also recommend this. Only available to Nationwide Current account holders though.

Revolut appear to issue Visa only to new standard UK card holders.

I tried to get a Mastercard too as they issued rainbow ones for recently (as a limited issue) but I missed the boat.
